The Old Belfry

On April 19th the Belfry was on the Battle Green, where it sounded the alarm which alerted the Lexington militia of the British Redcoat’s arrival. The Belfry was originally built and placed on “Belfry Hill” in 1762 before being moved to Lexington Common in 1767. The original Belfry structure was destroyed by a hurricane in 1909, with the present-day structure being built by the Lexington Historical Society in 1910. The current structure is a replica of the original belfry and houses a bell from the 19th century, which still tolls every Patriots’ Day morning.
